John Richard Glick, beloved husband, son, brother, uncle and friend, died Thursday, July 14, in a tragic automobile accident. He and two of his dear friends were stopped at a red light when their car was struck.

Born in 1970 in Boston, John attended the Buckingham, Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, where he thrived from pre-school through graduation. He studied Latin and theater, and eventually wrote and performed plays in Latin for younger children. John attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he met his future wife, Rebecca Crawford. In the late 1990s, John and Becky re-located to Chicago, where they married in September of 2004. Their compassion for one another, family and friends inspired those who knew them. The two shared a passion for music that was evident in their work and lives.

John was a songwriter and guitarist for The Returnables, a power pop band with a loyal following. He was a constant student of popular culture and a lover of unconventional culinary experiences. A devotee of philosophical literature and idiosyncratic Americana, John had an encyclopedic knowledge for a vast range of topics. His music ranged from songs about love and misguided romance to political commentary and satirical jabs at the misuse of power.

John leaves his beloved wife, Rebecca Lynn Crawford, of Chicago; his parents, Dr. Eugene and Susan Glick of Cape Neddick, Maine; and three older siblings: Katherine Antin Glick of Arlington, Massachusetts, Peter Hudson Glick, and his wife and children, Kerstin, Max, Sam and Olivia of Sudbury, Massachusetts; and his sister, Emily Alston-Follansbee, and her husband and children, Mark, Jeremy, and Annie Rose of Concord, Massachusetts. He also leaves his beloved in-laws, Virginia and Dennis Crawford of Dekalb, Illinois, and brother-in-law, Matthew Crawford and his partner, Diana Cepulionis of Chicago.

Services will be held on Tuesday, July 19, at Piser Funeral Home in Skokie at 1 p.m. Friends and family will be sitting shiva at John and Becky’s home following the service, until 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Concord, Massachusetts on Thursday July 22nd at 10:30 at Congregation Kerem Shalom. Following the service, the family will be sitting shiva in Sudbury, Massachusetts until 8 p.m., and in Cape Neddick. Maine from 9 a.m to 9 p.m, on Friday and Sunday.
