Blue Ridge Highway I suppose

open to the public:

performing to no one on city streets or in the woods.

video 1 - 02 Feb 2005. *windowsill again* ...near hubbard/leavitt in chicago. next to the Metra line. first take, train overcame. this is second take.
video 2 - 08 Mar 2005. *there you are, The Flaming Lips* ...front porch in grafton, ny. 16 inches of snow in 1 day. wicked cold. took a few takes, makes for cold fingers. someone learn the end chords for me.
video 3 - 16 Mar 2005. *sweet lil* ...petersburg pass at the peak of rte 2 over the taconic mtns. ny/ma border facing west. trip to N. Adams, MA to practice with Noel for April 9 show at The Midway Cafe in Boston. need to put a strap on the checkmate. wind moves camera, flirts with strap. and you can't tell, but i walked through 3 ft of snow for this shot.
video 4 - 16 Mar 2005. *listening to Pinback* ...Williams College. students walk first. some sort of gerbil experiment. and me driving. tour of the paseo.
video 5 - 16 Mar 2005. *frail common animal* ...rte 2 somewhere in ny. return trip from previous clip. dark sunset makes little light. parking lamps glow. oncoming car scares me away.
video 6 - 18 Mar 2005. *rock monsters song #2* ...jamming with my cousin Kassy. new song. blues jam in G. i get scolded for not singing my back up vox.
video 7 - 21 Mar 2005. *puttin it down, Beck* ...park slope, brooklyn. small corner park. beginning of drive home from NYC upstate to Grafton. lyrics at the end: no, yes, no, yes, no.
video 8 - 21 Mar 2005. *the shore my lawn* ...taconic parkway pull off. same trip as previous clip.
video 9 - 21 Mar 2005. *twenty miles westward* ...graveyard on rte 22. almost home to Grafton. song choice seemed appropriate, words and more. snow drifts are rather deep.
video 10 - 25 Mar 2005. *gut feeling, Devo* ...behind the studio, Reelsounds.
video 11 - 30 Mar 2005. *most unwanted, by Chris D'Alessio* ...behind the studio, Reelsounds, in the gangway. storm about to hit, but over-exposure augments the dimension. perched on 12 buds. original version of song may appear on bearhawk's upcoming album.
video 12 - 02 Apr 2005. *that's all* ...in a park near Montrose and Lincoln in Chicago. nice day. can't remember words yet. and the paper wants with the wind. little dog is persistent to see what's up. no pick.
video 13 - 05 Apr 2005. *favorite* ...i end up stopping at this rest station in Ohio everytime i roll through. end up hangin out near junk and this water tower each time. maybe eat a sandwich. little noisy today. notice the plane flying through my head.
video 14 - 16 May 2005. *long may you run, Neil Young* ...once i realized that Athens, GA was on the way to Houston from Virginia, i decided to go there. well, and i haven't seen a friend in a long time. seemed like a highway that's also a national park might be a good way to bide some asphalt. this is Fox Hunter's Paradise in the North Carolina. i believe i am about 3000 feet high, to say the least. and an abbreviated first chorus suits this song well.
video 15 - 17 May 2005. *govt girls* ...this is an old song of mine on the porch of an old friend of mine. presently (at that time), it is winterville just outside of athens. two doors down from Russell. happy birthday, sweet Emily Quinn, winterville's best twirler.
video 16 - 18 May 2005. *fake a few smiles* ...short song at the beach. 'twas real hot on a long drive from Athens to Houston. the only beach i could find in Mississippi. the locals recommend elsewhere, but i found it refreshing.
video 17 - 26 May 2005. *pink turns to blue, Husker Du* ...this was recorded in Austin on the porch of some friends, Miguel, Erik and Aasim. This is the second try (done at 6:43am) just before i drove my car for over 20 hours home to Chicago. the first try was too early and was subsequently too dark (done at 5:58am). Singing before breakfast is hard. I also tried to do a Built to Spill song at some park near downtown Austin, but the batteries on the camera died. Many thanks to these hospitable young men and their porch and futon, as well as James Neslo and Asra for being so entertaining.
